Assessment before repair
The repair scope depends on the construction of the yacht and the way the grounding load entered the structure. Where practical, inspection with the vessel ashore gives access to the keel and underwater hull while the internal bilge and grid areas can be assessed from inside. The objective is to identify sound structure before deciding what material must be removed and rebuilt.
Structural repair approach
When structural damage is confirmed, compromised laminate or failed bonding is removed back to sound material. The repair is then rebuilt with an appropriate laminate schedule, fibre orientation and resin system for the specific construction. The aim is not to hide cracking, but to restore the load path through the structure.
Documented repair example
On a 50 ft sailing yacht following a severe grounding, the internal grid had delaminated from the hull. Failed original tabbing was removed and the connection was rebuilt using correctly oriented biaxial fiberglass and epoxy.
Common questions after a hard grounding
Does visible gelcoat cracking always mean structural damage?
No. Gelcoat can crack without the underlying laminate being structurally compromised. After a heavy grounding, however, cracking around the keel or internal structure is a reason to inspect the area carefully rather than assuming the damage is cosmetic.
Can a yacht be repaired after serious keel or grounding damage?
Often yes, depending on the extent and location of the damage and whether sound structure remains available for a proper repair. The correct scope can only be determined after inspection and removal of compromised material where necessary.
Is an internal grid repair the same as a cosmetic GRP repair?
No. The grid is part of the yacht’s load-carrying structure. A failed grid-to-hull connection requires a structural repair strategy, not simply filler and a cosmetic topcoat.
Do you need the yacht out of the water?
Not for every first inspection, but a meaningful grounding assessment often benefits from access to the underwater hull and keel. The required access is agreed according to the symptoms and suspected damage.
